St. Stephen's was started about 1867 as a mission on Fulton Street. The society later relocated to Gates Avenue near Ralph Avenue where a church seating 250 was erected. Another move took the church to 809 Jefferson Avenue at Patchen Avenue where the present wooden building was erected. At some point, St. Martin Episcopal Church, located at 201 President Street, merged into St. Stephen and the consolidated congregation was renamed St. Stephen and St. Martin Episcopal Church.
