This red brick Victorian Gothic church, hidden on a quiet block of East 62nd Street just west of Second Avenue, was designed by Samuel A. Warner and built in 1886-87 for the Church of the Redeemer, a German language Presbyterian congregation. Later, the building was occupied for several years by Bethlehem Lutheran Church. As the area's immigrant population shifted, the building was acquired in 1918 for the new Roman Catholic Italian parish known originally as "Madonna della Pace".
